January 2008 High levels of rainfall have led to the Lower Derwent Valley flooding. This is a normal winter occurence as this the area comprises a series of flood meadows, pastures and woodlands supporting a rich diversity of plant species and outstanding populations of breeding and wintering birds. From the bridge over the river at Bubwith the flood defence forms a public footpath along the east side of the river. The path remains above water even when the river is in flood and the flood meadows are full of water.
